I believe online retailers need to be unique to stand out. And this must apply to your marketing and SEO too. So I tailor my SEO services around you, your products, your goals and your target customers.
For some of my e-commerce clients, I’m responsible for the entire SEO campaign, from determining the strategy to implementing. For others, I’m more of a support for their in house team. The part I play depends on your existing resource and goals.
At the outset of a campaign, we need to establish what you want to achieve. How many sales? What revenue? Which products are the biggest focus? And then we build targets around that.
SEO works best when it’s integrated into all other marketing activity. So I like to meet with other marketing teams in the business and find out how the activity can sync. There’s also valuable data each channel can share with others.
Why E-Commerce SEO?
I love working on SEO for ecommerce websites for a number of reasons. Firstly, with online stores you can typically measure revenue and attribute it to a channel or multiple channels. Being able to see the impact of SEO in revenue terms in Analytics is a real motivator for me and ecommerce lends itself well to that. I also find the number of opportunities for both short and long term SEO gains is huge in ecommerce, when you consider the thousands of different ways someone might look for a product online.
Of course, e-commerce sites present a unique set of challenges from an SEO point of view too at times. From internal content duplication to indexing issues, online retail sites can be a technical challenge. And I still enjoy getting under the hood of a website, picking out the problems and putting a plan in place to fix them.
Elements of Ecommerce SEO
My part in the SEO campaign varies from business to business. In some cases, I design the strategy and implement. In others, I support a team that already exists in house. But some of the key things I'm involved with for ecommerce clients are outlined here.
There's so much opportunity in keyword research for ecommerce websites. From the massive generic keywords (like "TVs") down to the specific product names and codes (think "JVC LT-43C790 43" Smart LED TV") and everything in between, there are thousands of ways your prospective customers might find you and this is about identifying them.
Ecommerce websites present their own unique technical SEO challenges in many cases. The technical assessment of your site is about identifying problems like internal duplication, indexing issues and site speed problems amongst many others. An audit identifies the issues and outlines how to fix them, with such fixes given clear priority ordering.
Ecommerce websites often have tonnes of content across a homepage, category pages, subcategory pages and products. Particularly on sites with lots of products, getting the copy unique and right for the audience can be a challenge. Content auditing is about assessing current content and putting in place a plan to get it spot on and contributing to your SEO goals.
One thing you can't control is what your competitors do. But you can have a good nosey at their activity and that's vital for an effective SEO campaign. At the outset, we need to dig into who the best performing competitors in your space are, what they're doing from an SEO point of view and analyse their websites, visibility and link profiles. It helps with putting realistic targets in place and finding opportunities.
If you've got any sort of competition in search (and almost all of us do), then acquiring links back your online shop website is absolutely critical. For some businesses, I write a link building strategy and support an in house team in delivering it. In others, I implement link acquisition campaigns that feature content marketing projects, digital PR tactics, editorial placement, image distribution and dozens of other methods.
Reporting and Analysis
Assessing performance is an on going thing, but there's a formal report at the start of each month outlining key performance metrics too. I look at revenue from organic search primarily, but also other metrics on the way to that (impressions, visibility, organic traffic). And I assess what's working best and what we need to improve regularly, which products are benefitting the most and where we're making the fastest progress.
