SEO for Ecommerce Websites

Ecommerce websites present both challenges and opportunities in terms of SEO. Some come with inherent duplicate content and technical challenges that are unique to the ecommerce space. Others have incredibly large volumes of URLs.

But on the flip side, overcoming technique challenges, making the most out of content and optimising your site for all stages in a customer’s buying journey presents phenomenal SEO opportunities. Ecommerce SEO also has the benefit of being incredibly measurable with the ability to set and work against simple revenue targets in a way that isn’t often as straightforward with non ecommerce websites.

My experience in SEO for ecommerce websites crosses a whole host of sectors from sports wear to supplements. I’ve worked in both B2C ecommerce and B2B ecommerce SEO.

Some of my online retail clients have me handle their SEO from end to end. With others, I handle or consult on just specific areas of ecommerce SEO, including these:

Keyword Strategy

Identifying the ways in which prospective customers search for these products and also what research they're carrying out online before getting to the point of buying. A solid starting point for ecommerce SEO is understanding the customers, what they buy, how they buy it and, importantly, WHY they buy it. We start with understanding how customers search then map the site to this journey and search activity.

Technical Analysis

Different ecommerce platforms present their own opportunities and restrictions. We work with sites on Shopify, BigCommerce, Magento and WooCommerce on SEO. We carry out technical SEO audits on ecommerce sites on all of those platforms. Our clients have sites ranging from a few hundred URLs to millions. From canonicals to crawling issues, we audit and make prioritised recommendations for fixes as needed.

On Site Content

From buying guides to category copy and product descriptions too, we work with ecommerce clients to identify opportunities for improved content and brand new content. With a background in copy and a solid understanding of SEO, I'm well placed to work on content specs for other copywriters or to get involved in creating copy directly. Getting the content on your site right can generate traffic, customers and even links.

Competitor Analysis

Understanding who you're up against and what activity they've been doing can help you to set realistic targets on SEO. It's also vital to understand competitor visibility and activity in order that you can plan your own ecommerce SEO strategy, ideally finding gaps in their activity that you can capitalise on.

Link Building

Amongst several link building tactics I employ, ecommerce brands in particular lend themselves naturally to product placement in press. I work with some retailers to set link building strategies incorporating multiple tactics for in house teams. And in other cases, I'm responsible for both strategy and implementation.

Reporting & Analysis

Understanding the impact of SEO activity in ecommerce is vital. How much revenue is your SEO generating? How many customers does it drive indirectly? Which are your strongest performing site areas? And where is the opportunity for even further growth. Understanding performance is vital to improving things.

Ecommerce Platforms I Work On

My ecommerce clients are generally all on Shopify, Magento, BigCommerce or WooCommerce. I don’t tend to work on bespoke builds but if you’ve got an ecommerce site on another platform not listed here, get in touch. If it’s nothing something I can help you with, I can probably refer you to someone who can.
